How to Discover Your Hobbies
Having a hobby helps you learn new skills, meet new people, and decompress after a stressful day. Discovering new hobbies as an adult can be an exhilarating experience. It might seem difficult at first, but we’re intrinsically rewarded for exploring topics we’re interested in, and things we’re curious about.
Getting started can be challenging. Use these simple techniques to get started and discover your hobbies:
-
Create a List - Start by creating a list of everything you are interested in. Ask yourself -what do I enjoy doing? What am I was curious about? Once you have a list, pick what you find most appealing, and start.
-
Start With What You Have - Look around the house, garage, and your storage. Can you start with what you have? You’ll be surprised at how quickly you can start exploring a new hobby with things you already have.
-
Visit Clubs and Meet-ups - Check for clubs and meet-ups in your community. Attending these events will give you the opportunity to meet people and ask questions. You’ll get first-hand feedback from people already immersed in the hobby.
-
Borrow or Buy Used - Ask your family and friends, they may have the things you need to get started. Alternatively, you can check local thrift-shops, and online market-places to find items at fraction of the cost.
-
Rinse and Repeat - Once you start a hobby, you may discover that you are not as interested as you thought you would be. That’s okay. Move on to the next item in your list and start the process again. You may find it helpful to keep a journal along the way.
Explore your interests, and itch your curiosity. During this time you’ll gain skills, meet new people, and most importantly - you’ll learn about yourself.
